Lifestyles That Put You At Risk of Breast Cancer


According to an article written by American cancer society, these lifestyles can put you at risk of having breast cancer.

 In my previous post on the early signs of breast cancer, i highlighted the symptoms of breast cancer and that general lifestyle, medications and physical activities, reproductive and menstrual history, alcohol consumption, physical activity, height, weight, family history of the cancer cell etc, can contribute to you being exposed to breast cancer.
Lets See how these Lifestyles can put us at risk of having breast cancer.



  • Nutrient Deficiency and Breast Cancer:

          Not getting enough of the right nutrients in your diets can   increase  your  risk of developing chronic health conditions like breast cancer. Some of the vitamins needed which include Vitamin D and Iodine is important to reduce your chances of having the cancerous cell.  Iron deficiency can cause all sorts of health issues, from fatigue to headaches and shortage of blood. Iron rich food  can help boost your hemoglobin. Vitamin D deficiency is another one of the risk factors in breast cancer. A 2012 study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism revealed that low vitamin D levels are a hallmark in women with breast cancer.Also it has been proven that the consumption of tea could be a risk factor.

  • Drinking Alcohol & Smoking:

Excessive alcohol consumption is known to increase the risk of breast cancer and other types of cancer too. The general recommendation — based on research on the effect of alcohol on breast cancer risk — is to limit yourself to less than 1 drink per day as even small amounts increase risk.Don't smoke. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Compared with non-drinkers, women who have 1 alcoholic drink a day have a very small increase in risk. Those who have 2 to 3 drinks a day have about a 20% higher risk compared to women who don’t drink alcohol. 

  • Being overweight or obese

  An article on being overweight or obese described here indicates that being over weight posses  a high risk of having breast cancer.Weight might also have different effects on different types of breast cancer. For example, some research suggests that being overweight before menopause might increase your risk of triple-negative breast cancer. Therefore avoid too much food intake and balance your food intake with physical exercises. Be physically active. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer. 

  • Contraceptives And Medications

Do you know that the constant intake of antibiotics and contraceptives could be harmful to your health? Some oral contraceptives,birth control shot, birth control implants, intrauterine devices (IUDs), skin patches, vaginal rings etc.These forms of birth control uses hormones, which in theory could fuel breast cancer growth.
 Studies shows that women who have never used contraceptives have less risk of developing breast cancer.
 Other Lifestyle That Could Put You At Risk Of Breast Cancer.
  • Women use a variety of hair products and other cosmetics and personal care products, and many often don’t consider the possibility that exposure to these products could be harmful.”

  • Evidence is growing that regular physical activity reduces breast cancer risk, especially in women past menopause. So, not being physically active could pose a problem.

  • Women who have not had children or who had their first child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk overall. 

  • Not breast feeding is also a breast cancer risk factor. 



What can I do to reduce my risk of breast cancer?

  • The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Control your weight. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of breast cancer. 
  • Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution.
  • Always have a balanced diet that has sufficiency of vitamins and iron.
  • Talk to your doctor for the best birth control method.
